WORLD LEPROSY DAY (posted for 29/1/12)
is Sunday, 29th January
and is celebrated in over 100 countries. Mozambique is
one of the least developed countries in the world. Widespread poverty and lack
of basic healthcare mean that disease and disability are commonplace.
Mozambique's northern province of Cabo Delgado (population around 1.7
million) has one of the highest numbers of reported cases of leprosy in Africa.
For countless families the only means of earning a livelihood is subsistence
farming, and children frequently work in the fields with their parents or
supplement the family income by begging. The effects of leprosy are devastating
and far-reaching. For many, those three words, ‘You have leprosy’,
are the tipping point.
Nowhere is this more true than in Mozambique, where a diagnosis of leprosy
can be the final load that makes life seem just too difficult to bear. At the
ALEMO (Association for Leprosy Affected People in Mozambique) centre in Pemba
there are provisions for income generation, such as tailoring and a
shoesmith’s room. There is a grain mill, pottery making room and area
for basket weaving. In addition, they also hold self-care groups and the
Government has an area on the ALEMO premises, which are used for teaching.
Some people from the ALEMO centre use these facilities. If you would like to
know how you can help, please contact us.

Just 10
A New Year resolution to get back to basics!
Most people have heard of the Ten Commandments,
God's basic instructions for our lives that, when followed, help us
live in freedom every day. These core principles are designed to equip and
guide us through life, keeping us on the right path, and helping us navigate
through the tough times. But are they really relevant to us today?
Starting on
January 22nd
St John's is to
present the Ten Commandments as you've never heard them before.
Unlike the “do”s and
“don't”s most
people imagine when quizzed about the Maker's Instructions, the message
will be both a challenge and an encouragement.
“Thou shalt not steal.”
is entitled
“How to prosper with a clear conscience”
and
“Thou shalt not commit adultery.”
is unpacked as
“How to Affair-Proof your Relationships”.
Living in the 21st century has many challenges and
not many answers. Over ten weeks
we
will be looking at the
Ten Commandments
and applying them to daily life.
Rather than being an irrelevant set of rules
we will
present the commandments as an essential guide to modern life.
The 10-week event begins on
Sunday 22nd January
and will be presented as a sermon on
Sundays at 8 and 9.30 a.m.,
and on
Thursdays at 11 a.m.
There will be a longer video presentation by J John on
Wednesday evenings
(with the exception of Ash Wednesday) at
8 p.m.
lasting about 45 minutes.
Dates as follows:
| Jan 22nd, 25th, 26th | Commandment 10: Find contentment |
| Jan 29th, Feb 1st, 2nd | Commandment 9: Hold to the truth |
| Feb 5th, 8th, 9th | Commandment 8: Prosper with a clear conscience |
| Feb 12th, 15th, 16th | Commandment 7: Affair proof your relationships |
| Feb 19th, 23rd | Commandment 6: Manage your anger (Video will be on Thursday) |
| Feb 26th, 29th, Mar 1st | Commandment 5: Keep the peace with your parents |
| Mar 4th, 7th, 8th | Commandment 4: Catch your breath |
| Mar 11th, 14th, 15th | Commandment 3: Take God seriously |
| Mar 18th, 21st, 22nd | Commandment 2: Know God |
| Mar 25th, 28th, 29th | Commandment 1: Live by priorities |

Domestic Violence Definition Consultation 2012
St. John's Branch has received the following
from HQ.
The Government has launched a consultation on whether it should make
some changes to the way it defines ‘domestic violence’, and whether
there is a consistent understanding of the definition across all
government departments.
We will be sending in a response to this consultation and would like
your opinions. Please find attached a briefing on the proposals plus
the 10 short questions. If you are able to take part, please answer any
questions you can but don’t feel obliged to answer any you are unsure
about.
Please do pass this on to anyone else you think may be interested in
responding.
The deadline to return this to Mary Sumner House is Friday 2nd March.
Download the consultation and response form as
a Word or
PDF file.
