You are by the main path looking towards the old church. Turn right for
the stumps (lower icon) or Garden of Remembrance (upper icon) or about for the gate
or advance for the main door.
This
picture shows the old church viewed from the West. The sketch shows
the West Tower about 1798. To the left is an area dedicated to those
who died young. To the right is a yew tree who's estimated age is
nearly 1000 years. After funerals flowers are usually placed under
it.
In the days when policemen still patrolled on foot, the local bobby's
job included checking that the church door was locked. One night,
as he walked through the graveyard exactly at midnight, he became aware
of footsteps and a following shadow. When he went faster, so did the shadow.
When he reached the door, the shadow brayed; it was a donkey that had got
loose.
