You are in the Chancel of the old church. Turn half left for the
altar, left for the other windows, hard left or half right for the memorials in the
north and south walls or hard right for the nave.
The windows depict Saint Luke and Saint John. Below are a
piscine (no longer in use) and three
sedilia. Note the rail dividing the Sanctuary from the rest
of the Chancel. Click the image for a larger view of the centre or the egg (right)
for a close up of the windows (36 kB).
piscine or piscina: After the holy
vessels have been used for consecrated elements, any remains must be disposed
of properly. One permitted method is to wash the vessels in water which
is poured into earth. A piscine, always found in the South wall of the
chancel, is a bowl which drains directly into the ground. Click the egg (left)
for a close up of the piscine.
sedile (plural sedilia): Sedilia, usually three
in number, are niches in the South wall of the chancel for priests to sit in during
the service. Click the egg (right) for a close up of the carving.
