St. John the EvangelistCoulsdon Parish Church - Old Coulsdon, Surrey |
|
This is a larger version of the view towards the old church from the altar of the new church. The organ was absent when this was taken. The new church is delightfully inspired by a classic style, modified to use the natural light provided by the north-south axis. This image was taken in the middle of a clear Spring day to show it to advantage. The central section, the triforium, is lit by a clerestory supported on lancet arches. These arches echo the style of the old church, built at the end of the Early English architectural period. Beyond are the side aisles lit by their own windows. At the far end, starting at the left, one may see part of the Angel window visible above the partition, the organ loft stairs behind which is the Shepherd window, the Sunday School banner, the screen doors, through the furthest arch on the right the Goodenough ensign and finally the case for the Book of Remembrance. All these are shown more closely in other views. One side of the screen which divides the two churches is here partly drawn. The flag or ensign was flown by Admiral Goodenough at the Battle of Jutland. The family, until recently, lived at Parson's Pightle (the old Rectory). |
