St. John the EvangelistCoulsdon Parish Church - Old Coulsdon, Surrey |
|
One of the windows high in the south wall behind the altar of the new church shows Christ in Majesty. It is shown here backlit by natural light. There are stigmata on the feet and left hand, not easily visible from floor level. Near the bottom of the staff, partly obscured by the date, "mcmlx", is the mark of Comper and Bucknall. One of their founders married the sister of the other and this window is by their great nephew, John Samuel Bucknall. The curvatures in a lancet setting which surround the Dove of the Holy Spirit are used in the new church and tower and echo the style of the oldest part which was built as the Early English period of architecture was starting to develop into the Decorative Gothic. |
